This summer, I had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to undertake an eight-week, multi-departmental work experience placement at PALFINGER EPSILON. My name is Andreas Okorn, and I’m a mechanical engineering student at the University of Leoben.

How to get there
When I was looking for a placement, it was a friend of mine who first told me about PALFINGER AG, one of the global market leaders in a wide range of lifting solutions, which appealed to my technical interests. Later on, during the actual application process for my work experience, I came across the subsidiary PALFINGER EPSILON, also based in Salzburg (Elsbethen, to be precise), which is the leader in terms of market, technology and innovations when it comes to specialist cranes for forestry, construction and recycling applications. Based on my speculative application, they offered me a highly sought-after work experience placement working in multiple departments. It was of course an opportunity that I couldn’t pass up, despite the distance from my university.
No sooner said than done! When I started my work experience, all the staff at PALFINGER EPSILON went about integrating me into their working lives in a very practical way and gave me specific and useful tasks right from the start.

My work placement – a unique experience
However, what made my work experience so unique was the chance to witness every stage of a crane project first-hand. Starting with the idea and going through development and design to final assembly and customer service, I was there to gain insight and lend a hand everywhere.
To give some specific examples, I got to help out and actually participate in projects for a specialist crane series for the USA, as well as a shipping strategy for the Asia-Pacific region. Every day, my colleagues made me feel that my assistance was encouraged and appreciated.

Flexibility is the key to success – in practice as well
As a mechanical engineer, I was particularly enthralled by the fast, clean and, above all, precise work that goes on in production at EPSILON. I also learned that in the crane business, just as in academic studies, you need to stay flexible at all times to be successful all over the world.
In any case, thanks to the interesting assignments, the fascinating product and the motivated and motivating employees, I had an exceptional experience on my work placement at PALFINGER EPSILON – an opportunity that I recommend to everyone!
