Renovation of the Gleinalmtunnel - Recycling Operations for the EPSILON Q170 TripleZ

With a length of 8,320 metres, the Gleinalm tunnel on the A9 Pyhrn motorway is the third-longest tunnel in Austria. The renovation work that is being carried out in the tunnel is correspondingly complex and time-intensive. For the Frank Metall company, the start of the renovation project for the existing tunnel in autumn 2017 was an exciting commission that they carried out with the help of the EPSILON Q170Z recycling crane.

Frank Metall has been active in the field of recycling since 1948. Whether small-scale or large-scale projects such as the demolition of tank storage facilities, railway bridges or factories, the company – now in its third generation – has always focussed on the needs of its customers.
 

MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE WITH THE EPSILON Q170 TRIPLE Z

The family-run company has been commissioned to perform a wide range of different tasks, including the renovation of the 680-metre-long Kroislerwand tunnel in Carinthia, Austria and the demolition of the Heiligenkreuz border crossing on Austria’s border with Hungary. But with the renovation of the Gleinalm tunnel, the Frank Metall company is facing a new set of challenges.
Work on renovating the nearly 40-year-old tunnel bores has been in progress since September 2017. The recycling company Frank Metall was commissioned, from September to November 2017, to transport away from the site 600 tonnes of iron, non-ferrous metals and other waste. “The project was a real challenge for us because, in addition to our day-to-day business, we had to transport large quantities of recycling material away from the site in a short space of time,” said Frank Metall’s managing director. But these massive quantities proved to be no problem whatsoever for the EPSILON Q170 Triple Z thanks to its high crane speed.
The Q170 Triple Z is perfect for recycling applications. Its telescopic main boom gives a maximum reach of 9.5 metres. The crane also has a lower ceiling height when its main boom is retracted, which makes it more flexible than cranes featuring conventional boom systems. This means that when it is deployed in locations like the Gleinalm tunnel, full use can be made of the available working surface. In addition, the recycling crane has a lifting capacity of 15–18 tonne-metres – properties that make the EPSILON Q170 Triple Z such an efficient, reliable and high-quality piece of equipment. No wonder, therefore, that the family-run company has been using PALFINGER EPSILON cranes since 2007.
